In 2010 the people of Llanwrtyd, Wales approached Wacky Nation to help create their own version of the Olympic Games for 2012, but with all the normal events replaced with an array of the most popular wacky events from around the United Kingdom.

The World Alternative Games created in conjunction with the team from LLanwrtyd ran over two weeks at the end of August 2012, showcasing the best crazy sports events from around the UK. From Bog Snorkelling and Rock Paper Scissors to the more obscure Ditch Racing via the relatively sedate delights of worm charming and stone skimming.

Newport and Cardiff were also involved hosting the International Underwater Hockey Championships and World Bath Tubbing Championships.

The Games were run under the ethos of the “Corinthian Spirit”, with medals awarded to everyone taking part. However the competitive edge of the Games was still encouraged, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded for first, second and third placed competitors.

The World Alternative Games was one of the biggest events in Wales in 2012, with thousands of visitors attracted to Mid Wales and over £1 million spent in the local economy. The Games are now due to be held as a bi-annual event.
